A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 others got wounded in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.

The three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the location and one more individual who fled subsequent to the explosion was apprehended shortly later. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the property reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who added that previous tries had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Financial Context

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the property was subject to an court order due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.

A gas canister had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our personnel,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the blast had happened on a level above the access point and told the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the blast, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told reporters, noting that the trio had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
