Investigation Finds Polar Bear DNA Variations Could Help Adaptation to Rising Temperatures

Researchers have observed modifications in polar bear DNA that may help the creatures adjust to increasingly warm climates. This investigation is thought to be the first instance where a statistically significant connection has been established between escalating heat and changing DNA in a wild mammal species.

Climate Breakdown Puts at Risk Polar Bear Existence

Global warming is threatening the existence of polar bears. Forecasts suggest that a significant majority of them might vanish by 2050 as their icy home melts and the weather becomes warmer.

“Genetic material is the instruction book within every cell, directing how an organism develops and functions,” stated the lead researcher, Dr. Alice Godden. “By comparing these animals’ expressed genes to regional environmental information, we observed that rising temperatures appear to be fueling a dramatic surge in the function of mobile genetic elements within the south-east Greenland polar bears’ DNA.”

DNA Study Shows Significant Modifications

Scientists analyzed biological samples taken from Arctic bears in separate zones of Greenland and compared “mobile genetic elements”: compact, roving segments of the genome that can alter how other genes work. The research focused on these genetic markers in connection to temperatures and the corresponding shifts in gene expression.

As local climates and food sources evolve due to transformations in ecosystem and prey driven by global heating, the DNA of the bears appear to be evolving. The community of bears in the hottest part of the country exhibited greater changes than the groups farther north.

Possible Adaptive Strategy

“This discovery is crucial because it shows, for the first instance, that a particular population of polar bears in the hottest part of Greenland are employing ‘jumping genes’ to rapidly alter their own DNA, which may be a critical survival mechanism against disappearing Arctic ice,” noted Godden.

The climate in the northern area are less variable and more stable, while in the south-east there is a significantly hotter and ice-reduced area, with steep climate variability.

DNA sequences in animals mutate over time, but this process can be hastened by climate pressure such as a quickly warming planet.

Nutritional Changes and Genetic Hotspots

The study noted some intriguing DNA alterations, such as in sections connected to fat processing, that could assist polar bears survive when resources are limited. Bears in hotter areas had more terrestrial diets versus the blubber-focused nutrition of northern bears, and the DNA of these specific animals appeared to be adjusting to this shift.

Godden stated: “The research pinpointed several key genomic regions where these mobile elements were particularly busy, with some found in the critical areas of the genome, suggesting that the animals are experiencing fast, significant genetic changes as they adapt to their disappearing icy environment.”

Future Research and Protection Efforts

The subsequent phase will be to look at different subspecies, of which there are numerous around the world, to determine if comparable changes are occurring to their DNA.

This study could help safeguard the bears from extinction. However, the experts stressed that it was vital to slow global warming from escalating by lowering the use of fossil fuels.

“We cannot be complacent, this offers some promise but does not mean that polar bears are at any diminished risk of extinction. It is imperative to be pursuing every action we can to decrease global carbon emissions and slow climate change,” stated Godden.
