The Battle Royale's Niche Traversal Techniques Become Widely Accessible During This Update

Respawn Entertainment have an exciting surprise in store for the popular battle royale gamers, perfectly timed for festive season. Enthusiasts of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to discover that a new movement mechanic is being implemented when the Amped season launches on November 4th.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by the developers, this feature gives players a surge of propulsion when scaling ledges and walls. As explained lead battle royale designer Eric Canavese, Mantle Boosting was previously been a feature of the game for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." However it's challenging for the average player, and is mainly used by competitive players in competitive play or esports competitions. This season, Respawn is making it easier for players of all skill levels to execute these advanced speed-boosts.

"This technique have been in Apex for some time, but the movement requires skill to perform and a player might not realize it's possible without outside knowledge," Canavese states. "We're adding a Mantle Boost indicator so players can easily see when and how to activate the high-octane traversal skill, opening up the mechanic and adding fresh strategies to compete for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

Why make a once niche movement quirk available to all players? Lead Legend designer the development lead explains the team wants gamers to experience empowerment — including ones who are new.

"Our community is doing advanced techniques like super-glides and tap-strafing, and we looked around at our competition, looked at what our players execute, and we wondered, 'How can we extend these capabilities to a broader audience?'" the designer clarifies. "Because currently, certain techniques are somewhat awkward to access — you need to remap your keybinds and execute within one-frame windows. We proposed, 'How about we make a polished implementation?'"

Season 27 Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is largely the central theme in Season 27, with characters the gravity mage, the defensive specialist, and the aerial combatant receiving enhancements to maintain them mobile. Recovery time on Horizon's Gravity Lift has been decreased, and this skill will boost users into the air faster than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover now include a roof and capability to provide movement bonuses to allies in range. But the spotlight is on the high-flying Valkyrie who's getting significant improvements now, with various adjustments applied to make her stronger, faster, and more lethal.

"I think there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time has arrived," says character developer Ian Holstead. "There's no doubt she was top-tier previously, but due to the addition of new Legends, mobility perks, and redeployment tools, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. This presented a really great opportunity for the team to revisit a bunch of aspects [of her kit] and sort of bring her back to former prominence."

Valkyrie's Upgrades

To restore Valkyrie's relevance in current strategies, Holstead notes the team evaluated all her skills and introduced significant changes. Her VTOL Jets received improvements, increasing her speed during flight, and the jets themselves now recharge much quicker, enabling the player to spend more time aloft. She can no longer take damage from her own Missile Swarm, which was enhanced to mark enemies who take damage from it. Her Skyward Dive skill — which launches her entire squad into the air for redeployment or retreat — now takes much less time to fire up. Additionally, she gains recently added Legend Upgrades that users can choose to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her Missile Swarm, or accelerate her Skyward Dive takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," he says.

Map Changes

Additionally, the only floating arena, Olympus, receives a movement-friendly facelift, with major changes that expands bottlenecks and renders securing elevated positions a bit less daunting. Respawn says the game Season 27 focuses on providing gamers the tools required to compete in the competition.

"Really, we were looking at Apex's core identity as a fast-paced FPS," explains principal designer Josh Mohan.

Apex Legends Season 27: Amped releases Nov. 4 at the specified times.
